Cold Mix Pavement
Cold Mix
Peckham produces high-performance, high-quality cold mix pavements and we manufacture polymer-modified binders that can further enhance cold mix properties.
Cold Mix Bituminous Pavements (CMB Pavements) are bituminous pavements that are produced at ambient temperatures. The materials are created using paving grade aggregates and asphalt emulsion. They are produced in a portable pugmill before being transported in dump trucks to a job site and placed by a conventional paver. Since the production of the mix is performed often on site and at ambient temperatures, it results in lower emissions and reduced energy consumption. One of the other major benefits of CMB pavement is the utilization of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). Oftentimes, RAP is added to the mix increasing the recycled content which improves both cost and environmental savings.
CMB Pavements are normally open graded mixes utilizing large percentages of coarse aggregate and low percentages of fine aggregate. This open grading allows the pavement to be very porous. CMB Pavements have been used for decades in lieu of standard HMA products. Recent environmental initiatives have caused porous pavements to be specified by designers to meet storm water control regulations and reduce the use of more expensive traditional storm water collection and control methods. Porous pavements allow water to percolate down through the pavement and be absorbed into the ground below.
CMB pavements can be used as a base course under a hot mix asphalt overlay or as a surface layer when treated with a seal coat. CMB Pavements are more flexible than traditional hot mix pavements and are suitable for highways with moderate traffic volumes. Municipalities use them widely for roads where the base may be substandard and where traditional HMA pavements would be susceptible to fatigue cracking. Municipal roadways, or any road that is no longer a candidate for preventative maintenance, are ideal for the use of CMB Pavements.
Cold Patch
Cold patch has been traditionally viewed as a low-tech material used to temporarily patch potholes to “get you through” until the hot mix plants open in the spring. Recent technical advances have allowed us to reformulate these mixtures using environmentally friendly additives that result in cold patch materials that are much more durable and reliable than previous generations of these products.
Peckham also produces high-performance mixes with additive concentrations that further enhance bonding between the liquid asphalt and the stone, creating added moisture resistance for the mix. This means the cold patch you put in the pothole in January will still be there in April.
