Details
Maximizing the use of space in a crowded, urban-campus environment, this open-air, two-level structure features an athletic field on the top level with 350 parking spaces below. An existing surface lot was transformed into a state-of-the-art, turf athletic facility suitable for a leading collegiate sporting venue while addressing parking demand.
Through the use of precast construction, the design incorporated an aesthetically pleasing brick and limestone façade. Casting the precast pieces off-site, under a controlled plant condition, resulted in a very durable, high-quality product that enabled the superstructure components to be constructed simultaneously with the foundations, allowing a significant reduction in the duration of the project schedule.
The project team was faced with many challenges including the re-routing of one of Boston’s very active and large, turn-of-century stormwater lines, construction on Boston’s historic Back Bay urban land-fill area, and an expedited schedule to accommodate a peak parking need for Boson University’s commencement.
